Preparing for the Big Wide World

OK so the second year is now in full swing, which means the new modules are well underway.

One of the modules we look at as second year students is Professionals in Practice, which aims to look at what different career options are available to law graduates and how to prepare you to apply for them.

So we have received our assignment briefing and everyone heaved a sigh of relief.

A CV. I kid you not, a CV. Our responses to this, a piece of cake. Oh, how wrong were we.

You see we all thought the same, some of us have been writing CVs for years, a bit of employment history, a bit of school life, easy.

NO!

And the reason, well because we are all wanting a career in Law. And, with the current stats showing that there are already 15,000 Barristers and 159,000 solicitors already in the business, it is more cut throat than we expected.

So Professor Hardy was on the case.

ASONS

This week we were lucky to meet Danni, head of HR at ASONS. ASONS is a thriving firm right here in Bolton, set up just seven years ago by a gentleman called Imran, a former taxi driver. Now due to its successful growth, ASONS is set to move into new premises, offering a large job increase.

Danni went on to explain that the firm offers substantial training and prospects to graduates and the firm is even offering the LPC (Legal Practitioners Course) to three people every three months.

This was refreshing news in a time when students are struggling to get the opportunity even for work experience and traineeships, both of which ASONS also offer.

Danni then passed over to Phillip who gave us a fantastic insight into CV building and Interview skills, sharing the perspective of the employers and what they look for today in a future employee. He offered handy tips to make our CV stand out from the crowd and how to wow the employer in an interview.

Their advice was really helpful in preparation for the eventual need to start applying for positions.

A big thank you to both Danni and Phillip of ASONS and Professor Hardy for the opportunity to learn more about a local firm.

Be sure to check out ASONS and why not enquire early about opportunities at available to you.

Anyway, back to trying to sell myself, for want of a better expression. Who would have thought writing a CV could be so hard.

Big fat welcome to UOB, from your Law Ambassador

Free stuff can only mean one thing, FRESHERS!!!!!

DSC_1989

A massive warm welcome my fellow law students. I have no doubt that you will all settle in fantastically and go on to acheive great things.

Take this opportunity to see how much Bolton has to offer you during your time here at UoB, register with a doctor, join the Gym, Bolton One has a great membership or check out the nightlife and all the offers.

Make the most of socialising this week, as forming great friendships will help you all in the year to come. Essay writing and cramming for those dreaded exams is so much easier in numbers.

Be sure to find Anselm Arthur on Facebook ,  he is your Student Union President. He will keep you up to date on social events held at UoB and is on call, should you need any Union assistance.

Also, pop into the Student Union to register for your NUS card. It will save you a fortune on Clothing and many offer things and just in time for Christmas! 😉

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

So I am Donna, one of the Ambassadors here at the University and I am just starting my second year on the LLB Law Degree. I will keep you posted on life as a Law student, hopefully offering useful hints and tips and a little comedy along the way.

Feel free to comment, follow and message or even stop me around the Uni for a chat.

Anyway, best get back to Public Law :/

Bye for now
